Buda Clock Collection

 

Buda is an authentic goldfields villa house and garden located in Castlemaine Central
Victoria. Named after Budapest by its Hungarian owner, Ernest Leviny, it was home to the creative
Leviny family for 118 years and houses their significant intact collection of furniture, art works and personal belongings. The Furniture History Society funded the restoration of the clocks at Buda.

The clock restorations have been completed, and this visit provides members with an opportunity to view a successful project.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the Castlemaine Art Gallery.

Lunch will be at Buda and there will be an opportunity to visit the Castlemaine Art Gallery in the afternoon.

If you decide to take the train to Castlemaine, transport will be arranged to Buda.

 This is an opportunity to share and find out more about a small piece of furniture. You can tell people what you know about the piece and seek additional information from members.

The restriction is that you need to be able to transport the furniture into the meeting room.

Waller House - Ivanhoe

Waller House (circa 1922) was the home of Napier Waller - muralist, mosaicist and
stained glass artist – and his wife Christian – also a stained glass artist and muralist as well as a printmaker.  The Wallers created a superb Arts and Crafts home in Ivanhoe and this has been left
intact as a memorial.  Christian’s young niece Klytie Pate came to live in the house, going on to become one of Australia’s foremost studio potters of the twentieth century. 

Places are limited to 30 and bookings must be confirmed with payment by Wednesday 4 March.

The address will be provided once the booking has been confirmed with the National Trust.

McCrae Cottage & coffee at Relton’s and Bernadette’s cottage

The Homestead is one of Victoria’s oldest, original existing houses, and was built on a large lease in the Port Phillip colony, Arthur’s Seat Run, comprising 33 square miles or 20,500 acres (8,296ha). The building was designed by Georgiana McCrae who was the illegitimate daughter of the 5th Duke of Gordon, a talented artist and dedicated diarist. The McCrae family were one of the first six pioneer families to establish properties on the Mornington Peninsula.

 Mary Ryllis Clark is the author of A tear in the glass: Nina Stanton's life journey through the fine and decorative arts.

 The book focuses on Nina Stanton’s 100 favourite objects in the Johnston collection. Nina selected objects that triggered memories of different times in her life, including antique furniture, clocks, paintings, silverware, glass and porcelain. Through them she tells her story which Mary shapes into an introduction to the fine and decorative arts.

 Mary is also the author of: Discovery Historic Victoria; In Trust, The First 40 Years of the National Trust in Victoria, The story of Rippon Lea; The story of Gulf Station; Loreto in Victoria.

This is an opportunity to see an exceptional collection of Australian furniture and decorative arts.

 As this is a visit to a private home it is restricted to FHS members and a maximum of 20 people. The address of the western suburbs home will be provided to members attending.

 Lunch will be booked at a local café where you will be able to purchase a meal and discuss the exceptional furniture.

The Furniture History Society, Victorian Branch, would like to contribute to funding the research, restoration or purchase of Australian furniture.

A Victorian regional gallery, museum, historic house or similar organisation may apply for a grant of up to $5,000 for researching, resorting or purchasing Australian furniture.  An individual who can demonstrate expertise in furniture research may apply for a research grant.

FHS members will meet at Villa Alba, 44 Walmer St, Kew

The Villa Alba Museum, overlooking the Yarra at Studley Park, is important to the state of Victoria for architectural, historic, social and aesthetic reasons. Its exceptional cultural significance is due to the unrivalled quality of the late Victorian hand painted decoration of its interiors. 

Andrew Dixon and Villa Alba volunteers will talk about Villa Alba and its furniture including Mrs Greenlaw's overmantle from W.H. Rocke's display at the Melbourne 1880-1881 International Exhibition.
