Annual Lecture, John McPhee, Dr Clifford Craig: the man i knew
29 October 2008, Museum of Sydney
Most people are familiar with Dr Clifford Craig as the co-author of the first book about Australian colonial furniture, and some for his books about colonial architecture.
However, most are unfamiliar with his groundbreaking, and still unique contribution to the study of Australian 19th century printmaking, and less so with the man himself. John McPhee fi rst met Dr Craig in 1974 and developed a professional friendship that saw them exchange information over many years. He frequently visited Dr Craig and saw much of the collection of furniture and Tasmanian art in the Launceston colonial house in which Dr Craig and his wife lived for many years.
He was also familiar with Dr Craig’s generosity and many of his curious ways. This lecture will discuss the man and his professional achievements, as well as his place as an historian of Australian colonial architecture, art and furniture, from a personal perspective.

The Proceedings edited and produced by Greg Peters and Jim Kennedy have now been published in an illustrated eighty page A4 document which includes all fifteen papers, available from The Furniture History Society for $20 plus postage.
